Overview

There are several international centers in the area of mathematical sciences. Fields Institute in Canada is such a center that awards a prize considered to be equivalent to the Nobel Prize in Mathematics. Centre de Recherches Mathematiques (CRM), Montreal, Canada; Mathematics Centrum, Amsterdam, Holland; Mathematisches Forschung...sinstitute, Oberwolfach, Germany; The Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications, Essex, England; Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley, USA; Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York, USA are examples of some renowned centers in mathematical sciences across the World. As a matter of fact, almost all the countries in the World have centers in mathematical sciences. The main purpose of these centers is to promote mathematics and to encourage and attract young researchers to mathematical sciences. It is believed that young mathematicians will be the leaders of the future of science. Thus, the age needs to have such a center in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

At present, most of the bright students of the Kingdom join medical or engineering sciences. The proposed center will promote mathematical sciences in the Kingdom and encourage and attract young students to understand the mathematical fundamentals behind them. Besides this, the center will invite eminent international researchers to collaborate with the members of the center. It will also arrange for holding Workshops, International Conferences, and training programs/refresher courses for schoolteachers.

In the research front, the Department of Mathematics has made notable contributions in the areas of Analysis, Differential Equations, Algebra, Computational and Numerical Mathematics, and Fluid Mechanics. The faculty at the Department of Mathematics have research collaborations with the top researchers (including Fields Medalists which are equivalent to Noble Prize Laureates in other subjects, Fellow of the Royal Society, Members of Unites States Academy of Sciences, Highly Cited Mathematicians). As a result, the department has produced a great number of Q1-level research publications. In fact, the department involves very high-quality staff members who are among the Highly Cited Researchers in the field of mathematics and mathematics-oriented applications.

Strategy

Mathematics serves as the cornerstone of all sciences, playing an increasingly vital role in driving scientific and technological advancements across various facets of our everyday lives and contemporary industries. A strong center conducting research in mathematics and its education will help to build a first-rate mathematical program at KAU. It would also provide service to research groups in the university in a variety of other fields such as Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Economics, and so on. It will also lend a helping hand to industries, the Department of Education, and other departments by providing the desired consultancy.

Our main strategic plan towards the sustainable development of the center is to create a KAU Mathematics Research and Service Park, which shall be always growing, flourishing, responsive to the service of various departments, and durable and its programs for the upcoming 5 years term (2023 – 2028). It has been designed in-line with Faculty of Science strategic plan.

Vision

Maintain and enhance mathematical research through national and international collaboration and participation, and serve the people of Saudi Arabia by facilitating and encouraging the development of research in Mathematics Research and Education.

Mission

Conduct fundamental research in important disciplines of Mathematics and provide significant research collaboration for academic and consultations to government, and industrial units according to their needs and center research interests. Publications in peer-reviewed journals and participation in conferences, colloquia, and seminars are the hallmarks of the scientific activities of the center.
